Alcorn Women’s Basketball Tops Mississippi Valley State 75-72 to Extend Winning Streak

ITTA BENA, Miss. — Kiarra Henderson scored 14 points to lead four players in double figures as Alcorn State defeated Mississippi Valley State 75-72 Thursday at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.

The victory marked Alcorn’s seventh consecutive Southwestern Athletic Conference win, the longest streak in more than 20 years, surpassing a six-game run during the 2004-05 season, according to school officials.

Henderson also grabbed 11 rebounds for her second double-double of the season. Nakia Cheatham scored 12 points, including eight after halftime, while Maya Hunkin-Claytor hit four three-pointers, her fifth such game this season. Dalayja Hurt-Floyd contributed three steals and five rebounds on defense.

Despite 14 turnovers, Alcorn forced Mississippi Valley State into 19 turnovers, converting those into 15 points. The Braves also got 19 points from their bench, with Lauren Nelson scoring eight, Jazlyn Johnson six, and Arene Iyekekpolor five.

The game was close throughout, with MVSU leading by as many as nine points in the first half. The Devilettes held a 47-39 advantage at halftime but were outscored 23-13 in the third quarter, allowing Alcorn to take control. The Braves maintained their lead by sinking nine free throws in the fourth quarter despite only two field goals in that period.
