Alcorn State Women’s Basketball Edges Bethune-Cookman on Road
Alcorn State women’s basketball extended its winning streak to three games Thursday night with a 56–51 victory at Bethune-Cookman inside Moore Gymnasium in Daytona Beach, Florida. The win keeps the Lady Braves in a three-way tie for first place in the Southwestern Athletic Conference with a 5–1 record, according to team sources.
Alcorn State set the tone early, limiting Bethune-Cookman to just six points in the first quarter and building a lead it maintained throughout the game. The Lady Braves led 26–19 at halftime and controlled the game through disciplined defense and timely scoring. Despite a late push by the Wildcats, Alcorn State managed to hold on for the win.
Nakia Cheatham led all scorers with 12 points and added nine rebounds, two steals, and a block. Ja’Sharreah Hunt contributed nine points, including a three-pointer and six free throws, along with two assists. Lauren Nelson also scored nine points off the bench and grabbed four rebounds. Leyah Houston scored eight points on 4-of-7 shooting and added three rebounds, while Jazlyn Johnson scored eight points on a perfect 3-for-3 shooting, including two three-pointers.
Kiarra Henderson facilitated the offense with seven assists, four rebounds, and three points. Defensively, the Lady Braves forced 17 turnovers and converted those into key points. Their bench outscored Bethune-Cookman 25–13, and the team maintained composure in the final minutes as the Wildcats attempted to close the gap in the fourth quarter.
Alcorn State will continue its Florida road trip Saturday, Jan. 24, with a matchup against Florida A&M, aiming to build on its recent success.
