Alcorn State Women’s Basketball Dominates Texas Southern in SWAC Showdown

ALCORN, Miss. — Alcorn State women’s basketball delivered one of its most complete performances of the season Saturday afternoon, defeating Texas Southern 66-51 at the Davey L. Whitney Complex. The Lady Braves improved to 7-9 overall and moved to 4-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play.

The game started closely, with Texas Southern scoring first before Alcorn State responded with a 10-4 run midway through the first quarter. The Lady Braves closed the period with a 19-12 lead and maintained that momentum into the second quarter. Defensive pressure was a key factor, as Alcorn State forced 22 turnovers and scored 24 points off those miscues, limiting Texas Southern to six points in the second quarter and building a 32-18 halftime advantage.

Kiarra Henderson led the balanced effort, with 13 points, seven rebounds, five assists, and two steals. Ja’Sharreah Hunt scored 14 points and attacked the basket consistently. Nakia Cheatham added 15 points and led all players with 12 rebounds, anchoring the Lady Braves’ inside presence. Maya Claytor contributed with eight points, including two three-pointers that helped quell Texas Southern runs in the second half.

Texas Southern made a push in the third quarter, outscoring Alcorn State 23-20. However, the Lady Braves responded with composure, with key baskets from Henderson and Cheatham. They extended their lead to as many as 18 points late in the game. Daeja Holmes led Texas Southern with 10 points, while Maci Quiller scored nine. The Lady Tigers shot 36.5 percent from the field, struggling against Alcorn State’s defensive pressure.

With the win, Alcorn State continues to build momentum in conference play. The Lady Braves will next face their schedule on Thursday, Jan. 22, with a 5 p.m. tipoff as they pursue further success in the SWAC.
