Alcorn State narrowly escapes Mississippi Valley State in women’s basketball

The Mississippi Valley State University women’s basketball team fell short in a close contest against Alcorn State, losing 75-72 on Saturday at the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex in Itta Bena, Mississippi.

Alcorn State improved to 12-9 overall and 9-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while Mississippi Valley State dropped to 4-16 and 3-6 in the conference. The Braves lead the all-time series 61-36, according to school records.

Devilettes standout Sydnei Marshall scored 18 points, grabbing five rebounds, blocking three shots, and stealing five. Jaeda Murphy added 15 points with five assists, shooting 55.6% from the field. Nairobi Lewis posted her third double-double of the season with 10 points and a career-high 12 rebounds. Ariel Jefferson also posted her third double-double, with 14 points and 10 rebounds.

Janiya Jones contributed off the bench with nine points, five rebounds, and three assists. Mississippi Valley State’s head coach Jason James said his team fought hard but was unable to secure the upset against the top-ranked Braves.
