Alcorn Softball Visits Louisiana-Monroe for Midweek Game

Alcorn State softball will play its fourth game in Louisiana in five days when it faces Louisiana-Monroe on Tuesday at 4 p.m. at the ULM Softball Complex in Monroe, La., according to school officials.

The Braves enter the game with a 3-6 record against Louisiana teams this season. They have lost their last 16 games in the state, with their most recent win a 1-0 victory over Grambling State on April 27, 2024.

Chiara Olison leads Alcorn with seven wins on the mound and owns a 6.73 ERA with 22 strikeouts. Ka’Miya Dillon has been flawless defensively, with 46 putouts and five assists in 51 chances. The team has stolen 40 bases in 44 attempts, with seven runners still perfect on the base paths.

The Braves hit a season-high three home runs in their last outing at Southern University over the weekend. Olivia Miller is riding a three-game hitting streak. Yahnya Acevedo has 11 multi-hit games, the most on the team, followed by Paris Thompson with six and Miller with five.

Louisiana-Monroe holds a commanding 14-2 all-time series lead over Alcorn. The Warhawks have won the last six meetings, with the last Alcorn victory a 4-3 game on Feb. 21, 2014. The teams last faced off in a doubleheader on Feb. 14, 2024, with ULM sweeping both games.

Alcorn coach Billie said her team is looking forward to the challenge. “ULM is a Sun Belt program playing really good softball right now, so we know we have to be at our best,” she said. “Midweek games are big for your program. They give players a chance to grow and provide us with a look outside the SWAC. We’re going there to compete and try to win.”

ULM, with a 22-17 record and a 6-3 mark in Sun Belt play, is ranked NR by USA Today/NFCA Coaches and ESPN.com/USA Softball. Head coach Molly Fichtner is in her seventh season with the team. The Warhawks average 4.0 runs per game with a .284 batting average and a team ERA of 3.27.

Alcorn’s last game was a 10-7 loss to Southern University on Saturday. Morgan hit a three-run homer to start the game, but Southern rallied with five runs in the sixth inning to win. Olivia Miller took the loss, dropping to 2-3 on the season.

The Braves will host Grambling State for a three-game series beginning Friday at 4 p.m. in Lorman, Mississippi.
