Alcorn Softball Sweeps Opening Day at Georgia Invitational
Covington, Georgia — The Alcorn State softball team opened the HBCU Collegiate Invitational with two victories Friday at Turner Lake Softball Complex. The Braves defeated North Carolina Central 4-2 and topped Maryland Eastern Shore 13-1 in five innings.
In the morning game, Alcorn scored two runs in the seventh inning to secure the win. First baseman Paris Thompson homered in her first at-bat of the season, and designated player Sanai Salvant drove in a run with a single. The Eagles tied the game in the fifth on a double by Tyler Suttles, which scored two runs.
Alcorn pitcher Chiara Olison earned her second win of the season, pitching all seven innings and allowing two runs. NCCU reliever Madeline Janssen took the loss after 1.2 innings of work. Olison struck out three and scattered seven hits.
In the second game, Yahnya Acevedo went 2-for-3 with three RBIs as Alcorn routed Maryland Eastern Shore 13-1 in five innings. The Braves scored five runs in the fourth and seven in the fifth to put the game away, with Karmen Bernard and Ka’Miya Dillon each driving in multiple runs.
Alcorn starter Alainah Felton earned her first win of the season, allowing just one hit over four innings. Maryland Eastern Shore reliever Paris Richards took the loss. The Braves will face Coppin State at 9 a.m. Saturday before playing Bowie State shortly after.
