Alcorn Softball Sweeps Doubleheader Over Xavier, Highlighted by McBride and Thompson Home Runs

Alcorn State softball defeated Xavier University of Louisiana in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at the Alcorn Softball Complex in Lorman, Mississippi. The Braves won the first game 8-0 in five innings and the second 10-2 in five innings, improving their season record to 9-8.

In the opener, freshman Rajayla McBride hit an inside-the-park home run in the first inning. She finished 2-for-3 with two RBIs and a double. Chiara Olison pitched a complete-game shutout, scattering six hits and striking out four. Alcorn scored three runs in the second inning, aided by Xavier errors, and added runs in the third, fourth, and fifth innings to seal the victory.

Alcorn’s defense was strong, and Olison earned her sixth win of the season. Xavier managed six hits but left six runners on base and committed three errors. Xavier pitcher Kayla Mandina took the loss, falling to 0-2 after allowing six runs in 3.2 innings.

In the second game, Paris Thompson homered for the second time this season, driving in five runs. Her two-run blast in the second inning gave Alcorn a lead it maintained throughout. Olivia Miller pitched a complete game, allowing one hit and striking out four to improve to 2-1. The Braves scored four runs in the third and fourth innings, aided by Xavier miscues, and finished with nine hits overall.

Xavier’s lone hit came from Amaya Williams, who scored two runs on wild pitches. Xavier starter Bella Rivera took the loss, allowing six runs over 2.2 innings. Alcorn’s top hitters included Yahnya Acevedo and Rajayla McBride, each reaching base multiple times.
