Alcorn Softball Faces Southern in SWAC Series in Baton Rouge
Alcorn State softball is seeking its first conference wins of the season as it travels to Baton Rouge, Louisiana, to face Southern University in a three-game SWAC series at Lady Jaguar Field. The series kicks off Friday at 5 p.m. and continues Saturday with games at noon and 2:30 p.m., with all contests available via live stream, according to team sources.
The Braves hold an 0-7 record in SWAC play and are 11-18 overall. They look to turn their season around against a Southern team that is 19-11 overall and 5-4 in league play. Alcorn’s Yahnya Acevedo leads the team with a .341 batting average and has seven doubles and three home runs. Multiple players, including Paris Thompson, Mariah Morgan, and Alainah Felton, have each hit two home runs this season.
Alcorn has stolen 38 bases in 42 attempts, and the team owns a .945 fielding percentage. Pitcher Chiara Olison has seven wins, and Felton leads the team with a 5.49 ERA. Acevedo has recorded 10 multi-hit games, and Thompson and Olison have five each.
Southern, under coach Brittney Williams, enters the series with a 19-11 record. The Jaguars swept Xavier in midweek play and are led offensively by Ava Wallace and Abigail Mitchell. Aaliyah Zabala has been dominant on the mound, with 15 strikeouts over 14 innings in recent outings. Laila Clark was named SWAC Newcomer of the Week after her performance against Grambling, batting .556 with six RBIs and a home run.
In the last matchup between the two programs, Alcorn defeated Southern 3-2 on March 17, 2025. However, the Jaguars have won five of the last six meetings, including the last three consecutive games. The last time the Braves took a series in Baton Rouge was in 2018. Coach Billie expressed confidence in her team’s preparation and readiness, emphasizing the importance of controlling what they can during the road series.
Following the series, Alcorn will play Louisiana-Monroe in a nonconference game Tuesday at 6 p.m., continuing their schedule in the Bayou State.
