Alcorn Baseball Looks to Bounce Back in Series at Houston Christian

Alcorn State is set to face Houston Christian in a three-game baseball series beginning Friday in Houston, Texas. The series at Husky Field kicks off at 6:30 p.m. and includes games Saturday at 2 p.m. and Sunday at 2 p.m., with all games available on ESPN+ and live stats provided.

Alcorn enters the series after a 19-0 loss to No. 4 Mississippi State in midweek action. The Braves are seeking their first win of the season, while Houston Christian is aiming to improve upon an 0-5 record after dropping a home game Tuesday to Sam Houston State and losing a series last weekend to Louisiana Tech.

Alcorn is not ranked in this week’s major polls, and Houston Christian also remains unranked. The teams will meet for the first time in program history.

Alcorn’s probable starters include Devin Kriley on Friday, Jacob Wingard on Saturday, and Kayden Sutton on Sunday. Houston Christian will start Joshua Caravalho, David Lopez, and Ben Smith in the respective games.

Coach Carlton Hardy, now in his second year leading the Braves, emphasized the importance of moving past recent setbacks. “In college baseball, you don’t have time to feel sorry for yourself. You push what happened to the back of your mind quickly and focus on Houston Christian,” Hardy said. “We respect what they’ve built and know they’ll come ready to play. We need to focus on executing our game plan and competing with energy and purpose.”

Houston Christian, under coach Clay Vanderlaan in his second year, is still searching for its first win of the season. Jeremy Rader leads the Huskies with a .389 batting average, and relief pitcher Louis Castano has a 1.80 ERA through three appearances.

In their last game, Mississippi State scored 13 runs in the first three innings en route to a 19-0 victory over Alcorn at Dudy Noble Field. The Bulldogs’ Tyler Pitzer earned the win, while Caden Wade took the loss for the Braves.

Following the series, Alcorn will travel to Louisiana-Monroe for a midweek non-conference game on Feb. 25 at 1 p.m., with updates available on the team’s social media channels.
