Alcorn Baseball Heads to Mercer for Weekend Series

Alcorn State baseball travels to Mercer for a three-game series at OrthoGeorgia Park in Macon, Georgia, beginning Friday. The series marks the Braves’ final nonconference weekend of the season.

The opener is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday, with subsequent games set for 2 p.m. Saturday and 1 p.m. Sunday. All games will be streamed on ESPN+ and available via live stats, with tickets available for each contest, according to the schools.

Both teams are unranked in this week’s major polls. Alcorn has a 2-10 record, including a win in its home opener, but remains 0-6 on the road. Mercer is 11-2, with most of its games played at home, and has been one of the top offensive teams early in the season.

Alcorn’s starting pitchers for the series are Jacob Wingard, Kayden Sutton, and Yoni Castro. Mercer counters with Garrett Lambert, Miguel Hugas, and Kai Decker, respectively, according to team rosters.

The Braves have struggled offensively, batting .211 as a team, while opponents hit .319 against them. Cooper Harris leads Alcorn with a .308 batting average and a .487 slugging percentage. Asher Friedman and Jaylyn Bennett also contribute offensively, with batting averages of .308 and .297, respectively.

On the mound, Hayden Konkler has been a bright spot with a 0.96 ERA in 9.1 innings. Five players have a perfect fielding percentage, led by Rayfield Adams III and Julian Jarrett.

Mercer holds a 3-0 all-time series lead over Alcorn, including a sweep in 2018 where the Bears outscored the Braves 37-7 across three games.

Mercer has started the season strong, posting an 11-2 record and batting .322 with 108 runs. Titan Kamaka leads the team offensively, hitting .500 with 13 RBIs. Logan Shepherd has also been a power hitter, slugging .776 with five home runs and 15 RBIs.

Mercer’s bullpen has been particularly effective, with Collin Ewaldsen posting a 0.00 ERA in six appearances, allowing just one hit and striking out 11 batters.

Following the series, Alcorn will travel to Northwestern State for a midweek game on March 10. Fans can follow updates on the team’s social media channels.
