Alabama State tops Mississippi Valley State 92-55 in men’s basketball

Montgomery, Alabama – Mississippi Valley State University’s men’s basketball team lost to Alabama State 92-55 on Monday night at the Dunn-Oliver Acadome.

With the defeat, the Delta Devils fall to 1-25 overall and 0-12 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Alabama State improves to 9-17 overall and 6-7 in the SWAC.

The Hornets hold a series lead of 52-42 since the 1983-84 season and have won six consecutive games against Mississippi Valley State. The Delta Devils’ last victory over Alabama State came on Feb. 13, 2023, with a 76-70 win.

Michael James led Mississippi Valley State in February with an average of 26.8 points per game, including 26 points against Alabama State, with four three-pointers. X’Zaevion Barnett contributed nine points, five rebounds, three steals, and three assists. Daniel Mayfield, who has scored in double figures in six straight games, added 13 points and four rebounds. Four players—Mayfield, Xzayvion Childress, Mussa Mzein, and Chance Sutton—recorded blocks on Hornets’ shots.

Mississippi Valley State returns home for its final two games of the season. The first is a Thursday doubleheader against Prairie View A&M, with the men’s game starting at approximately 7:30 p.m. inside the R.W. Harrison HPER Complex.
