Ole Miss scores 45 against Auburn, sets season highs on defense
Ole Miss scored 45 points against Auburn, its second-highest total against the Tigers. The Rebels had scored 48 against Auburn in 2022. The game was the 49th meeting between the teams; Auburn leads the series 35-14, or 35-13 excluding a vacated 2013 matchup.
Ole Miss’ four rushing touchdowns came from four players: Trinidad Chambliss, Will Echoles, Deuce Knight and Shekai Mills-Knight. Echoles scored in the second quarter to cap a 17-play, 89-yard drive that lasted 6:59. Ole Miss said it was the team’s longest drive of the season by both plays and time.
Mills-Knight ran 16 times for a career-high 71 yards and scored near the end of the second quarter. Chambliss threw for 263 yards and ran for a third-quarter touchdown, the 15th of his Ole Miss career. He finished with 328 total yards, moving to sixth in school history with 6,852 career yards of total offense.
Chambliss threw a fourth-quarter touchdown to Caleb Cunningham, extending his streak with a passing touchdown to 21 consecutive games. That is one short of Chad Kelly’s program record. Chambliss has completed at least 20 passes in 14 straight games. Horatio Fields also caught a fourth-quarter touchdown, his third consecutive game with a score, and matched his career high with six receptions for 73 yards.
Ole Miss’ defense recorded season highs with 10 tackles for loss and four sacks. Suntarine Perkins had two sacks, bringing his career total at Ole Miss to 22 and moving him into fourth place in program history. Tah’j Butler added two sacks, including his first at Ole Miss. The Rebels forced two turnovers, with Keaton Thomas and Anthony Robinson III each recording a forced fumble; Jamarious Brown recovered the fumble forced by Thomas.
Jehiem Oatis blocked an Auburn extra point, his second blocked kick of the season. Lucas Carneiro made a field goal to extend his streak to 13 consecutive games with a make. The kick was his 43rd at Ole Miss, tying Bryson Rose for fourth in program history.
The announced attendance was 67,041. Ole Miss coach Pete Golding’s career record stood at 8-3, including 4-2 in the SEC.
