Mississippi State stuns South Carolina with second-half rally

COLLEGE STATION, S.C. — Mississippi State rallied from a 16-point deficit to beat South Carolina 41-34 on Saturday, marking a strong start to SEC play for the Bulldogs. The victory moved Mississippi State to 3-0 overall and 1-0 in conference, with the team demonstrating resilience and mental toughness, according to head coach Jeff Lebby.

South Carolina built its lead in the second quarter, controlling time of possession and forcing turnovers. Mississippi State’s first three drives ended with an interception and two punts, setting the stage for a potential blowout. However, the Bulldogs responded by outscoring the Gamecocks 41-7 from midway through the second quarter to midway through the fourth.

Quarterback Kamario Taylor, who threw an interception on his first pass, showed leadership after the mistake. He told his teammates, “It’s my fault… I put y’all in a bad position,” and committed to moving forward. Taylor finished the game with 1,010 yards of offense and 12 touchdowns, according to the team.

Lebby praised the team’s unity, saying, “Our guys stayed together. They responded in a great way. I think we’ve got a connected team and a team that believes in each other.” The Bulldogs’ defense also played a key role, allowing only four touchdowns all season, with one coming on a short field.

Mississippi State’s offensive numbers are impressive, with 141 points scored this season. Running back Fluff Bothwell averages nearly six yards per carry and close to 100 yards per game. Multiple receivers have over 130 yards each and three have three touchdowns. Yet, coaches and players emphasize the team’s intangible qualities—resilience, brotherhood and belief—that could elevate their season.

The win sets the stage for an upcoming matchup against top-25-ranked Missouri in Starkville. Taylor expressed confidence about the team’s potential, saying, “We haven’t even played our best ball yet. If we can clean this up, we’re going to be very special as a team.”

As the Bulldogs prepare for the game, their focus remains on maintaining momentum and staying united, with the hope of making this season memorable, according to team members.
