Mississippi State Set for Final Fall Tournament at Steelwood
Mississippi State is scheduled to finish its fall men’s golf season at the Steelwood Collegiate Invitational, a two-day tournament hosted by South Alabama at Steelwood Country Club in Loxley, Alabama.
The calendar lists 36 holes for Saturday, Oct. 31, and 18 holes for Sunday, Nov. 1. The 15-team field includes three ranked opponents: No. 3 Auburn, No. 12 Texas A&M and No. 13 Georgia Tech. The course is listed at 7,096 yards and par 72.
Mississippi State enters the event with three team top-10 finishes this fall. Five Bulldogs have combined for eight individual top-20 finishes. The team placed 11th in its most recent tournament, the Fallen Oak Collegiate Invitational.
Freshmen Finn Burkholder and Yago Horno have accounted for all three of the team’s individual top-10 finishes, the program said. Together, they have recorded 11 rounds at par or better, including six in the 60s. Horno leads the team with seven rounds at par or better, three of them in the 60s.
Head coach Dusty Smith said the team would focus on its preparation and ball control, with the course presenting a challenge on approach shots. Mississippi State’s listed lineup is Arth Sinha, Horno, Burkholder, Jackson Skinner and Drew Wilson. Sinha has the team’s lowest scoring average among players who have competed in all four fall events, while Skinner and Wilson are set to enter the team lineup for the first time this season.
Bryson Hughes is listed as an individual entry. Mississippi State’s scheduled tee time is 8:30 a.m. Central on Saturday, with a shotgun start.
