Budapest, Hungary — Mississippi State saw four athletes reach the finals at the inaugural World Athletics Ultimate Championships, with Anderson Peters and Marco Arop each finishing as runners-up in their respective events, according to sources.
Peters placed second in the men’s javelin final Sunday with a throw of 86.18 meters. He led after the second round but was surpassed in the third by Sri Lanka’s Rumesh Pathirage, who threw 87.11 meters and then 91.09 meters, the only athlete to clear 90 meters on Sunday.
In the men’s 800 meters, Arop finished second with a time of 1:42.20. He led the race from the start but was overtaken in the final 20 meters by Algeria’s Djamel Sedjati, who surged past both Olympic champion Emmanuel Wanyoni of Kenya and Arop on the home stretch. Arop said he was honored to compete against top athletes and plans to focus on rest and recovery for future competitions.
Arop advanced to the final after finishing sixth in the preliminary round Saturday with a time of 1:44.21. Additionally, Mississippi State’s Navasky Anderson competed in the men’s 800 meters but finished 12th overall with a time of 1:44.83 and did not reach the final. Eppie also qualified for the men’s 400 meters final, finishing seventh with a time of 44.66 seconds after running 44.85 seconds in the semifinals Friday. Curtis Anderson finished eighth in the men’s javelin with a throw of 75.80 meters.
