Both of coach Will Irvin’s two preseason goals have officially come true.
After guiding Northwest to the Region 23 Tournament in the program’s first season of competition since 2017, Irvin’s men’s tennis squad received an at-large bid to the upcoming NJCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship tournament.
“Our top goal is making the postseason,” Irvin said, during January’s season preview. “The second goal is going to the national tournament. There are automatic and at-large bids that we can receive to make it out there, and it truly is a realistic goal for us. It’s all up to the team. We want to take it as far as we can and have fun. We have been training heavily and competing against each other. The biggest thing will be keeping our teams motivated to fight through adversity when it happens. We’re prepared and we are ready to do this.”
Northwest finished 6-8 overall and 6-4 in MACCC play, earning the conference’s No. 5 seed in the Region 23 Tournament. The Rangers entered the ITA national rankings at No. 24 in early February, and have remained nationally ranked ever since.
Hosted by Collin College in McKinney, Texas, the NJCAA Division I Men’s Tennis Championship is scheduled from May 15-19. Additional details will be provided when available on nwccrangers.com.
