Southern Miss Football Hosts UConn in First Meeting Saturday

The Southern Miss football team hosts UConn on Saturday at 6 p.m. at Renasant Stadium in Hattiesburg, Mississippi. The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on Southern Miss Sports Network affiliates or through SouthernMiss.com, according to university officials.

The Golden Eagles, with a 1-1 record, are looking to rebound from a 43-8 loss to Auburn last weekend. This matchup against UConn is the first in a planned home-and-home series; Southern Miss will travel to Storrs on Nov. 3, 2029.

UConn, also 1-1, opened its season with a 56-7 win over Lafayette before falling 38-14 at Maryland. The Huskies are under first-year coach Jason Candle, who previously guided Toledo to 81 wins over 10 seasons.

Southern Miss averages 28.5 points and 382 yards of total offense per game this season. Running back Steven Robinson leads the team with 174 rushing yards, and quarterback Ethan Hampton has thrown for 326 yards with two touchdowns. Wide receiver Mario Sanders has nine catches for 152 yards and a touchdown.

Defensively, Laquan Robinson has 17 tackles, while Mathis Haygood has 15 tackles and leads the team with 2.5 tackles for loss. The Golden Eagles have forced six turnovers in two games, including three interceptions by Kobi Albert.

UConn’s quarterback Kalieb Osborne has 421 passing yards and 120 rushing yards through two games, with four touchdown passes. Javon Brown is his top target with six catches for 92 yards and one score. Zion Paret has 15 tackles for the Huskies, who are one of two independent FBS teams, along with Notre Dame.
