Vicksburg, Miss. — Alcorn State’s volleyball team defeated Jacksonville State 4-1 Thursday at Keys Park, marking its first win over the Gamecocks in program history. The Braves (3-3) lost to Jacksonville State 1-0 last year in Jacksonville, Alabama, but turned the tables this time around.
Alcorn got off to a strong start, with freshman forward Grace Ambrose scoring twice in the opening minutes. She found the back of the net at 4:53 and again at 6:54, with assist from Annick Zouma, to give the Braves an early 2-0 lead.
The team continued its offensive pressure, with sophomore Leyla Llanos Boursiquot extending the lead at 11 and 24 minutes. Zouma and Ambrose combined to set up Llanos Boursiquot’s goal, making it 3-0 before Jacksonville State answered.
Emma Reeder scored for Jacksonville State to cut the deficit to 3-1. However, Llanos Boursiquot added a late goal in the 70th minute, assisted by Zouma, to secure the 4-1 victory for Alcorn.
The team totaled five assists in the match, tying a season high, and recorded 14 shots overall. The Braves will next face Troy University in Troy, Alabama, on Sunday, September 13, at noon.
