Alcorn State University will host Texas Southern University in a Southwestern Athletic Conference game Saturday at 3:05 p.m., according to the school. The event will include high school day activities beginning at 10 a.m.
The game will be broadcast on WPRL 91.7 FM with Charles Edmond calling play-by-play and Cedric Tillman on the sidelines. It will also be streamed live on SWAC TV.
Alcorn State enters the contest with a 2-2 overall record and a 1-0 mark in SWAC play. The Braves are aiming to improve to 3-2 and maintain their perfect record in conference games this season. Texas Southern holds a 1-2 record overall and is 0-1 in SWAC play.
Alcorn State features several players on preseason watch lists, including Cameran Rogers and Eric Thomas Jr., both named to the 2026 Deacon Jones Player of the Year Watch List. Thomas finished the 2025 season with 26 tackles in 12 games, while Rogers contributed to an offense that averaged 24.25 points per game last year.
Defensive back Tayvion Haney was named to the Aeneas Williams Award Preseason Watch List, and punter Demetrion Duvall made the preseason Punter of the Year Watch List, ending 2025 with 49 kicks for 2,093 yards. Both Thomas Jr. and Duvall were selected for the BOXTOROW HBCU Preseason All-America Team.
Alcorn was predicted to finish third in the West Division of the SWAC, according to league coaches and sports information directors. The team also boasts several preseason all-conference selections, including Rogers on offense, Thomas Jr. on defense, and Duvall on special teams.
Historically, Alcorn State has won the last two meetings against Texas Southern. The game marks a key point in the season as the Braves look to build momentum in conference play.
Head coach Cedric Thomas, now in his third year leading the team, holds a 13-15 record at Alcorn. The game will be played under favorable weather conditions, with a high of 83 degrees, light winds, and a 10% chance of rain.
If Alcorn wins, it would mark Coach Thomas’s 14th career victory and improve their record to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in SWAC play. The team will travel next week to face Grambling State on October 3 at 2 p.m.
