Alcorn State Beats Texas Southern in Overtime, 43-40
Alcorn State University won its second overtime game in three weeks, defeating Texas Southern 43-40 Saturday at Jack Spinks-Marino Casem Stadium. Fredrick Robertson scored four touchdowns, including the game-winning one-yard run in overtime, to lead the Braves to victory.
Alcorn improved to 3-2 overall and 2-0 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play. Texas Southern fell to 1-3 overall and 0-2 in the conference. The Braves amassed 520 yards of total offense, with 332 passing and 188 rushing yards, and recorded 27 first downs. This was their second overtime win of the season, following a double-overtime victory over Arkansas-Pine Bluff in Memphis.
Robertson was the standout, accounting for 175 yards from scrimmage and four touchdowns. He rushed 29 times for 105 yards and three scores, and caught five passes for 70 yards and another touchdown. His one-yard touchdown run in overtime clinched the win. Quarterback Jaylon Tolbert completed 26 of 41 passes for 332 yards and two touchdowns, adding 79 rushing yards for a total of 411 yards of offense.
The game saw Alcorn lead by as many as 22 points in the third quarter before Texas Southern rallied to tie it at 37-37 in regulation. The Tigers scored a late field goal to send the game into overtime. In the extra period, Texas Southern scored a field goal on its first possession, but Alcorn responded with a sustained drive, capped by Robertson’s fourth touchdown. The Braves converted a crucial fourth down during that drive before Robertson powered into the end zone to secure the victory.
Defensively, Mahamadou Diarra led Alcorn with nine tackles, including 1.5 tackles for loss and a sack. The Braves’ special teams made key plays, with Landon Carson blocking a field-goal attempt in the first quarter and Timothy Jasper blocking an extra point in the second. The team finished with 11 third-down conversions and perfect red-zone efficiency, scoring on all six trips inside the 20-yard line.
Alcorn is scheduled to return to action next Saturday, Oct. 3, when they travel to Grambling, La., to face Grambling State University at 2 p.m. CT.
