Women’s Basketball Loses to Sewanee, 71-67, in Conference Game

The Millsaps College women’s basketball team lost to Sewanee, 71-67, in a tense Southern Athletic Association game Sunday at Juhan Gymnasium.

The Majors led briefly in the third quarter, outscoring the Tigers 13-8, but Sewanee responded in the final quarter to secure the win. Millsaps made 12 three-pointers and forced 16 turnovers, converting them into 24 points. Sewanee’s bench contributed 19 points to the victory.

Senior Elyse Warren posted a double-double with 19 points and 17 rebounds, showcasing her all-around performance. Junior Bailey Johnson scored a career-high 18 points, adding three rebounds and one assist. Tia Anderson, another junior, scored 12 points, grabbed six rebounds and dished out two assists, including three three-pointers.

Garin Freeman contributed with 10 assists, eight points and four steals, highlighting her playmaking and defensive skills. The game was closely contested from the start, with both teams trading points in the first quarter. Sewanee took a 14-10 lead after hitting back-to-back three-pointers, but Millsaps closed the quarter with a buzzer-beating three from Anderson to trail 24-19.

The Majors narrowed the deficit to three points at halftime, 47-42, helped by Freeman’s free throws. In the third quarter, Bailey Johnson’s three-pointer and Anderson’s free throw put Millsaps ahead 49-48. The teams exchanged leads throughout the quarter, which ended in a 55-55 tie.

In the final period, Sewanee opened with an 8-1 run to regain control. Johnson made multiple three-pointers to keep the Majors within striking distance. Despite Johnson’s clutch shots late in the game, a turnover and foul in the final seconds allowed Sewanee to sink two free throws and seal the victory.
