William Carey’s Kayleigh Griffin Named UMAC South Player of the Week
COLumbus, Miss. — William Carey University’s Kayleigh Griffin has been named the Upper Midwest Athletic Conference South Division Player of the Week for women’s tennis, the league announced Tuesday.
Griffin, a junior from Houston, Mississippi, joined the Owls’ program at the semester break and quickly made an impact. She is only the second player in program history to earn the weekly award from the UMAC.
Last week, Griffin did not surrender a point in her match against Holmes Community College. She won at No. 2 singles with a 6-0, 6-0 score and contributed to a 6-0 victory in No. 1 doubles. The following day, she played No. 2 doubles and secured a 6-4 win against Southwest Mississippi Community College.
“It’s great to see one of our players receive athlete of the week,” William Carey head coach Hayden Embry said. “Kayleigh Ann has only been here a month, and she’s already making big strides in her game. This is a great way to start the year, especially heading into NCAA play this week.”
Griffin and the Owls team are scheduled to travel to LaGrange College in Georgia on Friday, Feb. 13.
