William Carey women’s basketball routs Point University by 50 points
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — The William Carey women’s basketball team delivered a commanding 86-36 victory over Point University on Saturday at Clinton Gym. The Lady Crusaders jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never trailed, leading 21-7 after the first quarter and 42-17 at halftime.
Carey started the game with a quick burst, with Shaneal Corpuz scoring the first basket and adding two more early layups. Madelyn Ladner and Addyson Sherer contributed to the early momentum, prompting Point to call a timeout with 7:44 remaining in the first quarter. Corpuz responded with another basket, helping Carey build a strong opening period.
The hosts continued to press in the second quarter. Corpuz scored an and-one, Sherer hit a three, and Charlie Gamberine added two three-pointers, stretching the lead further. Anna Rose Engle capped the half with a buzzer-beating shot from beyond the arc, giving Carey a 25-point edge at halftime.
Carey’s bench energized the team in the third quarter, with Leah Sutton, Presley Thompson, Meyah Doyle, and Bailey Devall combining for an 11-3 run that pushed the lead over 50 points. Alyssa Hillard added a three-point play, Doyle finished a smooth layup, and Engle made a clutch shot as the quarter ended, giving Carey a 66-30 advantage heading into the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Corpuz continued her strong play with three more at the rim. Jenna Garriga hit a mid-range jumper, Sutton scored on a steal and fast break, and Engle and Hillard added late layups. Doyle sank two free throws to close out the game. Corpuz led all scorers with 20 points, while Gamberine added 11. William Carey’s women’s basketball team returns to action Monday at Loyola University in New Orleans.
