William Carey Women Rout Mobile 87-54
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey’s women’s basketball team opened Saturday’s game with a strong start, building a 10-0 lead and never looking back in an 87-54 victory over Mobile.
The Lady Crusaders set the tone early, with Addyson Sherer hitting a three-pointer at the 7:59 mark. Jenna Garriga and Meyah Doyle contributed baskets as Carey controlled both the paint and the tempo. Mobile scored its first points at 5:33, but Carey responded with steady offensive plays. Brooklyn Cuevas hit a three to extend the lead to 21-6 with two minutes remaining in the first quarter.
Carey carried a 23-11 advantage into the second quarter. Alyssa Hillard opened the period with back-to-back jumpers, and Anna Rose Engle added a layup to push the lead to 33-14 with under six minutes left. Sherer made a three and a layup, stretching the lead to 24 points. Despite a late push from Mobile, Carey took a 45-24 lead into halftime.
After the break, Carey continued its offensive surge. Brooklyn Cuevas scored quickly, and Madelyn Ladner added a jumper to make it 49-24. Engle and Maddie Devall contributed baskets, while Leah Sutton and Hillard added points midway through the third quarter. Cuevas hit another three at 2:55, pushing the margin to 60-31. The Lady Crusaders finished the quarter with free throws from Ladner and Cuevas, leading 65-40 entering the fourth.
Sherer opened the final period with her fourth three-pointer, and Doyle added a transition layup, increasing the lead to 30 points. Cuevas made another three at 8:27, making it 74-40. Carey maintained control for the remainder of the game, securing an 87-54 win. Sherer finished with 22 points to lead all scorers, followed by Cuevas with 15.
The Lady Crusaders are scheduled to return to action Thursday, hosting UT-Southern in SSAC play. Tip-off is set for 5:30 p.m. at Clinton Gym.
