William Carey Sweeps LSU Alexandria in Doubleheader

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey University’s softball team swept LSU Alexandria in a doubleheader Tuesday. The Lady Crusaders opened with a 2-0 shutout before rallying for a 10-9 win in the nightcap.

In the first game, William Carey scored early and held the lead throughout. Albanie Fussell sparked the offense with a two-out single, and Julia Shaw doubled to drive in the first run. Caroline Lindsey followed with a single, pushing the lead to 2-0. Starting pitcher Jayden Sawyer limited LSU Alexandria to one hit over the final four innings to secure the shutout, according to school officials.

The nightcap was a back-and-forth battle with 19 combined runs and 18 hits. LSU Alexandria scored first in the second inning, with singles from Livie Thibodeaux and Haley Fontenot and an RBI bunt from Sophia Romero. Lainee Bailey added an RBI bunt to put the Generals ahead 2-0.

William Carey responded immediately. Lindsey doubled, and Kinley Hogue hit a two-run homer to tie the game. The Lady Crusaders took the lead in the third on a walk and three singles, with RBI hits from Shaw and Julia Sawyer pushing the score to 5-2.

The Generals cut the deficit to 5-3 in the fourth, but Carey answered with a run on a wild pitch and added two more in the fifth. Hogue tripled and scored on another wild pitch, and Brooklynn Montana drove in a run to extend the lead to 8-3.

LSU Alexandria rallied in the sixth, scoring six runs on three hits and two errors to take a 9-8 lead. Molly Sistrunk and Kilee Moody doubled for RBIs, and the Generals capitalized on errors to surge ahead. Carey responded in the bottom of the inning, with Lindsey tying the game with an RBI single and Sawyer putting Carey ahead with an RBI of her own. The Lady Crusaders held on, with Sawyer retiring the final batters to secure the victory.

William Carey is scheduled to host Faulkner University on Saturday at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field. The doubleheader begins at 1 p.m., according to the school’s athletic department.
