William Carey Sweeps Loyola to Win Fifth Straight SSAC Tennis Title

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Sixth-ranked William Carey defeated No. 24 Loyola University 7-0 Wednesday to secure its fifth straight Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) men’s tennis title and sixth overall. The Crusaders are now 9-1 this season, while Loyola fell to 6-4.

Carey took control early by winning all three doubles matches convincingly. Vinh Nguyen and Jean Nicolas Leblanc opened with a 6-1 victory at No. 1 doubles, followed by Louis Steinbichler and Islam Orynbassar’s 6-2 win at No. 2. Artur Ibragimov and Simon Muntwyler completed the sweep with a 6-2 victory at No. 3 doubles.

The momentum carried into singles play, where the Crusaders won all six matches in straight sets. Nguyen defeated Sam Izrael 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, and Orynbassar posted a 6-1, 6-4 win at No. 2. Ibragimov and Leblanc secured victories at Nos. 3 and 4, respectively. Carey finished strong with Muntwyler edging Luca Abati 7-6, 6-3 at No. 5 and Steinbichler winning 6-4, 7-5 at No. 6.

The Crusaders are scheduled to play next Sunday, April 12, in New Orleans against Xavier University in non-conference action.
