William Carey Softball Wins Two Saturday Games
Pineville, La. — William Carey softball won both of its games Saturday, including a shutout over Louisiana Christian and an 8-3 victory against Texas A&M–San Antonio, according to team officials.
Head Coach Wendy Hogue praised her team’s conduct and performance. “Going 4-0 was great, and I’m pretty pumped for the wins,” she said. “However, Craig, Hannah, and I are more proud of the way the girls carried themselves the entire weekend. Comments from opposing teams, fans, officials, and even strangers at the hotel and restaurants showed they represented William Carey well.”
The Lady Crusaders struck early against Louisiana Christian, scoring in the first inning. Brooklyn Montana drew a walk, moved into scoring position on a groundout, and scored when Julia Shaw hit a double to center field. That proved to be the only run until the seventh inning, thanks to dominant pitching and solid defense from both sides.
William Carey’s pitcher Jayden Sawyer faced the minimum in three of the first four innings and limited Louisiana Christian’s offensive opportunities. The Wildcats managed to get their first baserunner when Lexi Broussard was hit by a pitch, but she was quickly erased on a caught stealing. The Crusaders stranded multiple runners in the middle innings but finally broke through in the seventh.
After Liz Cross reached on an error and advanced to third, Shaw delivered an RBI single. Albanie Fussell followed with an infield single, setting up Kinley Hogue’s two-run triple to right field, extending the lead to 4-0. Sawyer closed the game with a flyout and strikeout to secure the shutout. “Jayden and the defense only needed the one run,” Hogue said. “I can’t say enough about our pitching and defense all weekend.”
In their second game, William Carey built an early lead against Texas A&M–San Antonio and held on for an 8-3 victory. The Jaguars scored first in the opening inning, but Carey responded quickly. Leadoff hitter Cross walked, stole two bases, and scored on a single from Caroline Lindsey to tie the game.
The Jaguars regained the lead in the third, but the Lady Crusaders answered with a four-run inning highlighted by a bases-clearing double from Harper Dupre. Relief pitcher Shaw shut down TAMUSA over the final four innings, allowing just one hit. Lindsey added an RBI single in the fifth, and Hornsby brought home another run in the sixth. Shaw struck out the side in the seventh to finish with a complete game, earning her second win of the day.
“Game two was our first opportunity to come from behind, and it was good to see the team stay confident and focused,” Hogue said. “Every spot in the lineup contributed, and it was fun to watch.” The Lady Crusaders return to action Friday, February 13, against Stillman College at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field. The doubleheader begins at 4 p.m.
