William Carey Softball Loses Two Close Games at Gulf Coast Invitational
Gulf Shores, Ala. — William Carey’s softball team finished its final day at the Gulf Coast Invitational with two close losses Sunday. The Crusaders fell 1-0 to Campbellsville and 4-1 to Saint Xavier, according to team sources.
In the first game, Campbellsville scored the only run in the fourth inning. Both teams opened quietly, with Campbellsville getting a single in the first and Carey threatening in the bottom half with back-to-back singles from Brooklynn Montana and Caroline Lindsey. However, Campbellsville escaped the inning unscathed.
The game remained scoreless through the next innings. Campbellsville broke through in the fourth when Lydia Jones doubled and later scored on a two-out single by Jessie Daniels. Carey threatened again in the fifth and sixth innings but was unable to score. The Lady Crusaders left runners on base in both frames and ultimately lost 1-0 after Campbellsville retired Carey in order in the seventh.
In the second game, Carey took an early lead. Liz Cross drew a leadoff walk, and Montana singled to put two runners on. A sacrifice bunt moved both into scoring position, and Sawyer delivered an RBI single to right field, scoring Cross for a 1-0 advantage.
Saint Xavier responded in the third with a two-run double by Jazmyn Casas, which put the Cougars ahead 2-1. SXU added two insurance runs in the sixth. Casas singled and was replaced by a pinch-runner, who advanced to third on a bunt and error. Mallory O’Connor then doubled, driving in both runners to make it 4-1. Carey managed one baserunner in the seventh but couldn’t mount a comeback.
The Crusaders are scheduled to return to action March 13, traveling to Mount Vernon, Georgia, for a conference game against Brewton-Parker College at 1 p.m., according to athletic officials.
