William Carey Finishes 2-1 at NFCA Leadoff Classic with Wins Over FHU, Georgia Gwinnett

Columbus, Georgia — William Carey wrapped up its weekend at the NFCA Leadoff Classic with a 2-1 record. The Lady Crusaders defeated Freed-Hardeman and No. 4 Georgia Gwinnett on Saturday before losing to Coastal Georgia on Sunday afternoon, according to team officials.

On Saturday, Carey rallied from an early four-run deficit to beat Freed-Hardeman 7-6. The Lions scored four runs in the first inning, highlighted by an RBI single from R. Locke and a three-run homer by L. Brown. William Carey responded in the second inning with RBI hits from Anna Grace Shows and Liz Cross. The Lady Crusaders tied the game at 4-4 with back-to-back RBI doubles from Shows and Cross in the fourth.

In the fifth, Julia Shaw hit a solo home run, and Kinley Hogue added a two-run blast, giving Carey a 7-4 lead. Freed-Hardeman scored twice in the seventh, including a homer from Locke, but Shaw closed out the game with a groundout to secure the win.

Later Saturday, Carey routed Georgia Gwinnett 12-2. After two scoreless innings, the Grizzlies took a 1-0 lead in the third. Carey responded in the fourth with RBI singles from Shows and Caroline Lindsey, and a bases-loaded walk to Dupre put the Lady Crusaders ahead 2-1.

Carey then broke the game open in the seventh with a grand slam from Sawyer. Shows, Cross, and Fussell followed with additional hits and RBIs, extending the lead and sealing the victory. Georgia Gwinnett scored an unearned run in the bottom of the seventh.

The Lady Crusaders concluded their weekend with a 3-1 loss to Coastal Georgia. The Mariners scored two runs in the first inning and added another in the second. Carey scored in the sixth, but Coastal Georgia held on for the win, ending the game at 3-1.

William Carey is scheduled to return to action on March 6 at the Gulf Coast Invitational in Gulf Shores, Alabama, where they will face Cumberlands (Ky.) at 3:45 p.m., according to team officials.
