William Carey Completes Doubleheader Sweep Over Stillman with 7-1 Win
HATTIESBURG, Miss. — William Carey completed a doubleheader sweep of Stillman on Friday, winning 4-3 in the opener and 7-1 in the nightcap. The Lady Crusaders improved their record with the wins at Joseph & Nancy Fail Field.
In the first game, William Carey took an early lead with a solo homer from Kinley Hogue in the second inning. Stillman responded with a bases-loaded walk and a single from Olivia Hobson to take a 2-1 lead. The Tigers extended their lead to 3-1 in the fourth on a sacrifice fly, but William Carey rallied in the sixth and seventh innings. Albanie Fussell’s double trimmed the deficit to 3-2, and Caroline Lindsey’s two-run single in the seventh gave the Lady Crusaders a walk-off victory. Julia Shaw earned the win in relief, allowing one run over 4.2 innings with four strikeouts.
In the second game, William Carey jumped out early, with Liz Cross leading off with a single. An RBI single from Brooklyn Montana and a subsequent run on a Lindsey hit gave the team a 2-0 lead. The Lady Crusaders added to their advantage in the third, with Hogue and Anna Grace Shows driving in runs to make it 5-0. Stillman’s only run came in the fourth, but Carey pitcher Jayden Sawyer shut down the rally with a strikeout. In the fifth, Cross’s two-run single extended the lead to 7-1. Sawyer pitched a complete game, striking out 17 and holding Stillman to two hits and one run.
The Lady Crusaders are scheduled to play a doubleheader against Xavier University at 12 p.m. Saturday at their home field.
