William Carey baseball team wins 10-inning game against Alma 8-5
JACKSON, Miss. — William Carey University’s baseball team edged Alma College, 8-5, in 10 innings on Saturday at Millsaps College’s Twenty Field. The win improves the Owls’ record to 5-5, while the Scots fall to 4-1-1, according to school officials.
William Carey opened the scoring in the top of the first inning, with a single from Baron Brack that drove in Jay Marbutt. Alma responded with two runs in the bottom of the first to take an early lead, 2-1. The Owls added a run in the fourth on an error and another on an RBI single from Jack Sledge, making it 4-2.
William Carey led 5-3 after Bryson Barnes’ sacrifice fly in the seventh. Alma scored twice in the bottom of the ninth to tie the game at 5-5, with relief pitcher Robby Canten allowing the runs before Will Carter closed out the inning. The game moved into extra innings tied.
In the top of the 10th, William Carey took the lead on an unearned run after a fielding error and a misplayed pickoff attempt allowed Michael O’Neil to score. Later, senior right fielder Zach Johnson hit a two-run homer to right-center on a 1-1 pitch, his third home run in as many games, to extend the lead to 8-5. Carter then pitched a scoreless 10th inning, earning his third win of the season. He allowed two hits, struck out two, and did not walk a batter in 1.1 innings of relief.
