Western New Mexico edges Delta State 4-3 in men’s tennis
RICHARDSON, Texas — The Delta State University men’s tennis team lost a close match to Western New Mexico University on Friday at the UTD Tennis Complex. The Statesmen fell 4-3 after a competitive outing that saw strong singles performances but couldn’t overcome the early doubles deficit.
Western New Mexico took the early lead by securing the doubles point. Juan Diego Alzate and Alejandro Bravo lost 6-1 at No. 1 doubles, while Valentin Greco and Simon Ojeda dropped a 6-3 decision at No. 2. The No. 3 doubles match went unfinished as the Mustangs clinched the point.
Delta State responded in singles, winning three straight-set matches to tie the team score. Alzate claimed the first point for DSU with a 6-4 win over Jack Semper at No. 2 singles. Greco then defeated his opponent 6-3, 6-0 at No. 3. Alejandro Bravo added another with a 6-2, 6-2 victory at No. 5 singles.
Western New Mexico secured the victory with wins on courts 1, 4, and 6. Ojeda fought hard but lost 7-5, 6-3 at No. 1 singles. Marti Cerda Castillo and Valentino Millimaci also fell in straight sets at Nos. 4 and 6.
The 4-3 loss marked DSU’s first setback after opening the season 2-0. The team will continue its road trip Sunday against the University of Texas Permian Basin at 10 a.m. from the UTD Tennis Complex.
