West Alabama shuts out Delta State in series finale
Cleveland, Miss. — West Alabama handed Delta State a 12-0 loss in six innings Sunday at University Field. The Tigers capitalized on early home runs and a five-run sixth to pull away from the Lady Statesmen.
West Alabama took an early lead in the second inning with back-to-back home runs by ShaKeria Washington and Kayla Morris. Washington’s solo shot to center and Morris’s two-run homer to right center gave the Tigers a 3-0 advantage.
The Tigers added single runs in the fourth and fifth innings before breaking the game open with a six-hit, five-run sixth inning. West Alabama finished with 12 hits, led by Washington’s three RBIs and a three-run triple from Haley Shannon in the sixth. Morris also drove in three runs and scored twice.
Delta State’s best scoring chance came in the first inning when Mary Teague walked and advanced to third on Carly Dunigan’s single. However, the Lady Statesmen failed to score as two infield outs ended the threat. The team managed only three hits in the game, with Maeve Lavoy, Dunigan, and Hallie Turner contributing.
Lavoy pitched 5.1 innings, striking out five before giving way to Kendal Moore for the final two outs. West Alabama’s Eleanor De Block pitched a complete game, scattering three hits and striking out three.
Delta State will resume play next weekend with a Gulf South Conference road series at UAH, featuring a doubleheader Friday and a single game Saturday.
