Valdosta State Sweeps Delta State in Softball Doubleheader

VALDOSTA, Ga. — Valdosta State University’s softball team overcame early deficits to defeat Delta State in both games of a Saturday doubleheader at Steel’s Diamond. The Blazers won 8–3 and 3–2, completing the sweep.

In the first game, Delta State took an early 3–0 lead, highlighted by a two-run homer from Kyleigh Wheaton in the first inning and an RBI triple from Hallie Turner in the fourth. However, four Delta State errors in the game allowed Valdosta State to rally, scoring four runs in the fourth and sixth innings to take control. Cailyn Cooke drove in four runs for the Blazers, including a two-RBI single in the fourth. Giselle Portanova earned the win, pitching five innings, while Savannah Barfield recorded the save.

In the second game, Delta State again scored first, taking a 1–0 lead in the second inning on an RBI single from Ally Agner. Maeve Lavoy hit her first home run of the season in the fourth, extending the lead to 2–0. Valdosta State responded with a solo homer from Saylor McNearney in the sixth and a two-run walk-off homer from Rachel Lee in the seventh to complete the comeback. Lavoy finished 2-for-3 at the plate. Kendal Moore pitched 6.1 innings for Delta State, allowing five hits and striking out three. Toree Wofford earned the win in relief for the Blazers.

The teams are set to conclude their three-game series Sunday afternoon at 12 p.m. Central Time/1 p.m. Eastern Time.
