Jackson, Tenn. — Union University’s women’s basketball team beat Mississippi College 84-53 in Gulf South Conference play Thursday at Fred DeLay Gymnasium.
The Bulldogs improved to 13-7 overall and 8-4 in the conference, while the Choctaws fell to 6-11 overall and 5-7 in league play.
Union dominated the glass, finishing with 44 rebounds — the second most by the team this season, just five shy of its high. Olivia Lee led the Bulldogs with 27 points and added 10 rebounds. Maddie Gray scored 11 points, including three 3-pointers, and dished out three assists. Katie Yoder contributed 10 points, two blocks, and two 3-pointers.
Mississippi College’s Keller Bigham posted her first double-double of the season with 13 points and 11 rebounds, including eight offensive boards. She became the second MC player this season to record a double-double, joining Valencia McFall, who scored nine points and had two blocks. McFall also has three double-doubles this season.
Union took control early, shooting efficiently from the perimeter and building a 43-24 lead by halftime. The Bulldogs made five 3-pointers in the first quarter, while MC struggled offensively, hitting just four of 21 shots overall. MC also contributed nine offensive rebounds and scored nine points in the paint in the first half.
The second half saw both teams struggle with turnovers, combining for 14 in the third quarter. Union maintained its rebounding edge, leading 13-8 on the boards in that period and continuing to extend its lead.
Mississippi College shot just 25% from the field in the final quarter and was out-rebounded overall. The team will look to bounce back Tuesday, Jan. 27, when it travels to Christian Brothers for a 3 p.m. tip-off at Canale Arena.
