UCLA edges Mississippi State in 10-inning thriller at Globe Life Field
ARLINGTON, Texas — UCLA edged Mississippi State 8-7 in 10 innings Sunday afternoon at Globe Life Field, as part of the Amegy Bank College Baseball Series. The top-ranked Bruins improved to 9-2, while the Bulldogs fell to 11-1.
UCLA scored first, with Will Gasparino launching a two-run homer in the third inning. The Bruins added another run in the fourth on Cashel Dugger’s RBI single to go up 3-0. Mississippi State responded in the bottom of the inning, with Reed Stallman hitting a two-run homer and Ryder Woodson doubling in a run to tie the game at 3.
The Bulldogs took a 5-3 lead in the seventh, thanks to a sacrifice fly from Jacob Parker and Noah Sullivan’s solo homer in the eighth, which was his second of the day. UCLA tied the game in the ninth on Roch Cholowsky’s two-run homer with two outs.
Mississippi State appeared to have sealed the win in the bottom of the ninth when Woodson’s ground-rule double scored Sanders from third. However, UCLA responded in the 10th, scoring three runs on a wild pitch and a two-run triple by Aidan Espinoza. The Bulldogs made a late rally, with Stallman hitting his second homer of the game, but UCLA held on for the win.
Ryder Woodson led Mississippi State with a 4-for-5 performance and an RBI. Stallman went 3-for-3 with two home runs and four RBIs. Starting pitcher Duke Stone allowed three runs over 3 2/3 innings. Easton Hawk earned the win in relief for UCLA, while Ben Davis took the loss for Mississippi State.
