Trevecca Nazarene beats Mississippi College women’s basketball team
CLINTON, Miss. — The Mississippi College women’s basketball team fell to Trevecca Nazarene 81-56 at A.E. Wood Coliseum on Saturday. The Choctaws moved to 5-10 overall and 4-6 in the Gulf South Conference. Trevecca improved to 8-6 overall and 5-4 in league play.
Valencia McFall, Nia Coleman and Karly Ivy each scored 10 points for Mississippi College. Vivian Sketoe added nine points, including three three-pointers, and recorded three steals. Keller Bigham led the team on the boards with six rebounds, while McFall contributed four.
The Choctaws struggled offensively, scoring only 15 points in the first half. They forced 22 turnovers, converting them into 19 points, but could not counter Trevecca’s shooting efficiency. The Trojans made 10 three-pointers and scored 38 points in the paint, outscoring MC 23-9 in the first quarter. They continued to build their lead in the second period, outscoring the Choctaws 23-9 and maintaining a strong inside game with six points in the paint.
Trevecca capitalized on turnovers, converting five Mississippi College giveaways into points and making two three-pointers in the second quarter. The Choctaws shot 23% from the field and trailed 39-15 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Trojans increased their lead with 14 points in the paint, compared to MC’s 10, despite the Choctaws’ four steals. Turnovers hampered MC’s efforts and kept Trevecca comfortably ahead, 61-32, entering the final period.
In the fourth quarter, Mississippi College outperformed Trevecca 24-20 by forcing turnovers and creating second-chance opportunities. The Choctaws forced eight turnovers and scored 11 points off them, maintaining pressure. Though they were outscored 14-4 in the paint, their four three-pointers and 12 bench points contributed to their scoring efforts.
Cheyenne Trotter led Trevecca with 18 points and 11 rebounds. Tatum Shaw scored 17 points, including four three-pointers, and added seven rebounds. Brianna Burgess scored 10 points for the Trojans. Mississippi College returns to action Jan. 17, hosting Delta State at 2 p.m.
