Texas State beats Southern Miss 7-1 to open series
SAN MARCOS, Texas — Southern Miss softball (29-18, 10-6 Sun Belt) fell to Texas State (30-16, 10-6 Sun Belt) 7-1 in the series opener Friday evening at the Bobcat Softball Complex.
Kinsley Gordon-Sivley led Southern Miss with her ninth multi-hit game of the season, including her team-leading fourth triple, but the Golden Eagles couldn’t overcome early deficits. Kayla Giardina suffered the loss, moving to 14-7 after pitching 129.2 innings this season.
Giardina entered in the bottom of the first and retired the Bobcats in order after a bunt single, which led to a double play. Gordon-Sivley singled in the top of the second, but Texas State responded with two solo home runs in the bottom of the second to take a 2-0 lead. The Bobcats added to their lead in the fourth with a three-run homer, making it 5-0.
Southern Miss scored its only run in the top of the fifth when Kayce Bennett drove in Kinsley Gordon-Sivley with a groundout. Texas State extended the lead to 7-1 in the sixth with a two-run home run. The Golden Eagles mounted a brief threat in the seventh with two walks, but Texas State closed the game with a double play and a groundout.
