Texas Southern Beats Mississippi Valley State 9-3 in Series Finale
Texas Southern defeated Mississippi Valley State 9-3 on Sunday at MacGregor Park in Houston. The Tigers improved to 10-10 overall and 5-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Delta Devils fell to 4-17 and remain winless in conference at 0-6.
Mississippi Valley State recorded double-digit hits in all three games of the series but was unable to secure a victory. The team’s top hitter was Gabe Huelsing, who went 3-for-3 with a double, reached on a hit-by-pitch, and scored a run. Cody Leming also contributed offensively, registering hits in each of his three at-bats.
For the Delta Devils, Tom Early drove in two runs with a single and was hit by a pitch, while Noah Bufford went 2-for-4. Tanner Aoki added two singles and scored once. Kendall Brookins drew the team’s only two walks.
On the mound, pitchers Angel Escobar and Gage Deutsch each pitched one scoreless inning, striking out one batter apiece. Mississippi Valley State will now return home for its first game at Magnolia Field in nearly six weeks, hosting Alabama A&M at 5 p.m. Friday, according to team officials.
The series marked the sixth consecutive victory by Texas Southern over Mississippi Valley State since 2012. The last time the Delta Devils defeated the Tigers was on February 17, 2023, with a 7-5 win. The teams will face off again later this season, with the Tigers currently holding a commanding series lead.
