Texas Southern beats Mississippi Valley State 11-4 in SWAC baseball series

Texas Southern defeated Mississippi Valley State 11-4 Saturday at MacGregor Park in Houston. The Tigers improved to 9-10 overall and 4-1 in Southwestern Athletic Conference play, while the Delta Devils fell to 4-16 and remain winless in conference at 0-5, according to school officials.

Cody Leming, a recent home run hitter for Mississippi Valley State, went 4-for-4 with two doubles, two runs scored, a stolen base and an RBI. Despite his performance, the Delta Devils couldn’t overcome a strong offensive showing from Texas Southern, which scored early and often.

Texas Southern’s Byron Robinson and Evan Joubert each homered, contributing to the Tigers’ offensive explosion. Robinson’s solo shot in the sixth inning was one of five home runs in the game. Kendall Brookins of Mississippi Valley State also impressed, falling just short of the cycle in a 3-for-5 effort with two RBIs.

Mississippi Valley State’s pitching was solid in relief, with Daniel Scott retiring the side in order. Series history shows Texas Southern leading 5-1 since 2012, with the Tigers on a five-game winning streak. The last win for Mississippi Valley State was on Feb. 17, 2023, a 7-5 victory.
