Tennessee tops Mississippi State 6-2 in SEC baseball game

Tennessee’s baseball team defeated Mississippi State 6-2 Saturday night at Dudy Noble Field in Starkville. The Volunteers scored early and maintained control throughout the game.

Tennessee struck first with a solo homer from Reese Chapman in the first inning. The Volunteers added three runs in the second, capitalizing on timely hitting and aggressive baserunning. They built a 4-0 lead and kept it for the remainder of the game.

Mississippi State struggled offensively against Tennessee starter Tegan Kuhns, who limited the Bulldogs to four hits over six innings and struck out seven. The Bulldogs scored their first run in the fifth inning when Jacob Parker doubled and later scored on Ryder Woodson’s RBI double. Gehrig Frei’s solo homer in the seventh cut the deficit to 5-2, but the Bulldogs could not close the gap further.

Tennessee added an insurance run in the eighth inning. Brandon Arvidson pitched three scoreless innings to earn the save. Duke Stone took the loss for Mississippi State, allowing five runs on 11 hits over 5 2/3 innings. The Bulldogs finished with eight hits, struck out 10 times, and left seven runners on base.

With a crowd of 16,814, the sixth-largest on-campus attendance in NCAA history, Mississippi State will try to salvage the series Sunday at 1 p.m. on SEC Network+. The Bulldogs will start sophomore left-hander Charlie Foster, while Tennessee will send senior Evan Blanco to the mound.
