Southwest Mississippi Baseball Sweeps Meridian in Doubleheader
Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted Meridian Community College in a doubleheader Tuesday, winning 13-6 and 4-3. The Bears improved to 18-11 overall and 2-4 in conference play.
In the first game, Talen Boyd started on the mound, pitching 3.2 innings with two strikeouts. Andrew Hoff earned the win after pitching 1.2 innings without allowing a run. Dom Smith finished with four innings pitched and four strikeouts. The Bears’ offense was prolific, totaling 13 runs and 11 hits.
Southwest trailed 4-2 after four innings. The Bears responded with a six-run bottom of the fourth, highlighted by a double from JD Hidalgo that scored three runners and a walk-loaded bases situation that led to timely hits and runs. Hidalgo finished with three hits, including a home run and a double, and five RBIs. Tanner Moore and Justin Domiano each added two hits in the game.
In the second game, Rhyson Carroway pitched all seven innings, allowing three runs and striking out five. The Bears took an early 3-1 lead after two innings and extended it to 4-2 after five. The game was decided in the bottom of the seventh when Johnathan Miller made a key defensive play, catching a line drive and throwing out the tying run at home plate to preserve the win.
Johnathan Miller led the offense with two hits and three RBIs in the second game. Tanner Moore, Justin Domiano, and Drew Swan each contributed one hit. The Bears will host Holmes on Saturday with hopes of improving their conference record.
