Southwest Mississippi Baseball Secures Walk-Off Win Over DuPage

Southwest Mississippi Baseball hosted a three-game series against College of DuPage and Southeastern Iowa Community College on Saturday and Sunday, February 28 through March 1.

The Bears defeated College of DuPage 6-5 but fell to Southeastern Iowa 7-9 and 1-12. Talen Boyd started on the mound against DuPage, pitching 4.2 innings with two strikeouts. Will McLeod relieved him for 1.1 innings, recording three strikeouts. Nathan Carter pitched the final two innings and earned the win for Southwest.

Down 4-5 in the bottom of the seventh, the Bears tied the game on a single by Sam Tumminello that scored Johnathan Miller. After holding DuPage in the top of the eighth, Southwest secured the victory with a walk-off walk with the bases loaded in the bottom of the inning.

Johnathan Miller led the team offensively with two hits and two runs scored. Tanner Moore, Tristain Haynes, Drew Swan, Cam Bolden, and Tumminello each contributed one hit. Several players, including JD Hidalgo, Bolden, Haynes, and Moore, stole bases during the game.

The Bears faced setbacks in their games against Southeastern Iowa. In game one, they lost 7-9. Rhyson Carroway pitched five innings with 11 strikeouts and allowed just two runs. Tate Miller threw two innings with three strikeouts, and Nathan Miller took the loss after pitching the final inning. Landon French led offensively with two hits, while others contributed one hit each. Several players, including Hidalgo, Tumminello, and Haynes, stole bases.

In the second game against Southeastern Iowa, Southwest was defeated 1-12. Multiple pitchers saw action, including Konnor Cazenave, Andrew Hoff, Ian Edwards, Tee Robinson, and Caden Case. Hoff recorded three strikeouts, Robinson two, and Case one. Hitting highlights included Hidalgo, Tumminello, and Hayes Loper, each with one hit.

Head Coach Jack Edmonson commented on the weekend, saying, “We had a tough weekend, but we won three of five games this week against some good teams. We are banged up and have some guys sick, but I am proud of the toughness our players showed. We’re looking forward to a slower week to recover before conference play.”

The Bears, now 14-5, will travel to Scooba on March 3 to face Pearl River and East Mississippi in a doubleheader.
