Southern University Defeats Alcorn in SWAC Women’s Tennis Match

Millbrook, Ala. — Southern University earned a 4-2 victory over Alcorn State in a Southwestern Athletic Conference women’s tennis match Saturday at The Fields at 17 Springs. The match was part of the SWAC Pod #2 event hosted by Alabama State.

Southern took an early lead by winning two of three doubles matches. Kai Wince and LaTesha Grant defeated Katherine Grados and Natalija Nikolic 6-2 at second doubles, while Decora Antoine and Shahd Habib edged out Amelia Tatafu and Hana Bajramovic 7-6 at first doubles. Alcorn’s Oihane Villanueva Lopez and Zoe Crimmel claimed the third doubles point by defeating Tshegofatso Tsiang and Samara Onwuteaka 6-4.

In singles play, Southern won three of four completed matches. Tsiang overwhelmed Tatafu 6-3, 6-1 at the top spot, and Habib beat Crimmel 6-2, 6-3 at third singles. Grant rallied after dropping the first set to beat Lopez 6-0, 4-6, 6-4 at fifth singles. Alcorn’s Nikolic came from behind to defeat Antoine 3-6, 6-2, 6-4 at second singles, while Katherine Grados dominated at sixth singles, defeating Ratidzo Mabukwa 6-2, 6-1.

The match at second singles between Wince and Bajramovic was unfinished at 1-6, 6-4, 3-3 after the team result was decided.

Alcorn, now 5-15 overall and 2-3 in SWAC play, concludes the second SWAC pod event Sunday against Alabama A&M at 1 p.m. in Montgomery, Alabama, on the campus of Alabama State.
