Southern Miss Women’s Basketball Prepares for Final Week with Trip to South Alabama

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss women’s basketball is headed to Mobile, Alabama, to play South Alabama on Wednesday in the second-to-last game of the 2025-26 regular season. The Lady Eagles (14-14, 7-9 Sun Belt) seek a strong finish to improve their positioning for next week’s Sun Belt Conference Tournament in Pensacola, Florida.

Tipoff is scheduled for 5 p.m., with broadcasts available on ESPN+ and the Southern Miss Sports Network. Jason Baker, the Voice of the Lady Eagles, will host the Lady Eagle Courtside Show at 4:30 p.m. on 92.7 FM and the Southern Miss Game Day App. Pat Greenwood will anchor the ESPN+ broadcast, produced by South Alabama.

Southern Miss fell 97-80 at Troy on Feb. 21, ending a two-game winning streak. Meloney Thames led all scorers with 24 points. The Lady Eagles struggled on the boards, being out-rebounded 62-40 by Troy, which also posted three double-doubles, led by Zay Dyer’s 21 points and 20 rebounds.

Jakayla Johnson leads Southern Miss with an average of 14.9 points per game. Thames, Hayleigh Breland, and Carly Keats are also in double figures. Redshirt freshman Whitney Hart has started 12 games and averages 6.4 points and 5.8 rebounds per game, but has increased her averages to 9.1 points and 8.4 rebounds since her first start.

The teams will meet for the 42nd time in series history. Southern Miss leads 27-14 overall and 6-1 in Sun Belt play since joining the conference in 2022-23. The Lady Eagles won the first meeting this season 84-65 in Hattiesburg, with Johnson scoring 20 points off the bench.

Southern Miss holds a 10-10 record in Mobile, including a 5-3 mark at Jaguar Gym and 5-7 at the Mitchell Center, which opened in 1999. The Lady Eagles’ last win in Mobile was Jan. 27, 2024, a 77-43 victory.

South Alabama (10-17, 3-13 Sun Belt) is led by third-year head coach Yolisha Jackson, who has a 25-64 record. The Jaguars have three players averaging double figures: Amyah Sutton (11.7), Cordasia Harris (10.9), and Daniela Gonzalez (10.0). Harris leads the team with 8.4 rebounds per game.

Missy Bilderback, Southern Miss’s coach, is 4-1 all-time against South Alabama, including a 1-0 record with the Lady Eagles.
