Southern Miss Women’s Basketball Defeats Texas State 76-62

SAN MARCOS, Texas — The Southern Miss women’s basketball team secured its sixth conference win of the season Wednesday, defeating Texas State 76-62 at Strahan Arena. The Lady Eagles moved to 11-6 overall and 4-2 in Sun Belt play, according to school officials.

Jakayla Johnson led all scorers with 19 points, while Carly Keats added 17. Southern Miss led wire-to-wire after opening with a three-pointer from Keats just over a minute into the game. The Lady Eagles built an early 11-4 lead, sparking a strong first quarter that ended with a 21-12 advantage.

Southern Miss maintained its momentum into the second quarter, with Keats and Hayleigh Breland fueling a run that pushed the lead to as much as 14 points. The Lady Eagles shot only 28.6% from the floor in the half but made 73.3% of their free throws, helping them take a 34-23 lead into halftime.

In the third quarter, Breland scored her final points of the game, and Johnson began to heat up after a slow start. The Lady Eagles extended their lead to 15 points entering the final period. They reached their largest margin of the game with a late bucket from Meloney Thames, finishing with a 76-62 victory.

Texas State was led by Kyra Anderson, who scored 16 points, and Taleiyah Gibbs with 15. Southern Miss dominated the glass, outrebounding the Bobcats 47-34, including 19 offensive rebounds—the team’s best since facing Nicholls earlier this season. Freshman center Whitney Hart made her first career start, finishing with four points and seven rebounds.
