Southern Miss Softball Sweeps Day Two at Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge
The University of Southern Mississippi softball team went 2-0 on Saturday during the second day of the Jacksonville Spring Break Challenge in Jacksonville, Florida. The Golden Eagles defeated Brown 18-2 in five innings and edged Jacksonville 7-5, according to school officials.
Southern Miss opened the day with an offensive explosion against Brown, run-ruling the Bears with 18 runs on 11 hits. Hannah Christian led the way, going 4-for-4 with five RBIs, a home run, and four runs scored. She also drew a walk and scored five runs overall. Christian’s third-inning three-run homer was the first of the season for the Golden Eagles.
Starting pitcher BrookLynn White earned her third decision of the season, allowing just one hit and one walk over three innings while striking out three. The Eagles’ offense also featured doubles from Chloe Miller and Julia Glasgow and a triple from Carlee Tubbs. Brown’s pitcher Edie Cobb took the loss, giving up eight runs in 1 1/3 innings.
In the second game, Christian’s clutch, bases-clearing double in the fifth inning broke a 4-4 tie and helped Southern Miss secure a 7-5 victory over Jacksonville. The Eagles scored three runs in that inning, highlighted by Christian’s double, which scored three RBIs. Kayla Giardina pitched the final two innings, earning her seventh win of the season and sealing the victory.
Southern Miss will continue its Florida trip Sunday with a game against Presbyterian at 9 a.m. CT at the Debbie & Fred Pruitt Softball Complex.
