Southern Miss Softball Sweeps Day Two at Black and Gold Challenge

HATTIESBURG, Miss. — Southern Miss softball (3-0) posted two wins Saturday during the second day of the Black and Gold Challenge. The Golden Eagles defeated the University of Alabama at Birmingham 14-7 and Southeast Missouri State 5-4.

Southern Miss took an early lead against UAB with a six-run first inning. They added more runs in the second and fourth innings, including a three-run frame in both. Natalie Herrington started on the mound for the Eagles, earning her first start of the season. Hannah Christian led off with a single in the first inning and contributed offensively throughout the game, driving in three RBIs.

In the game against Lipscomb, the Golden Eagles edged out a 5-4 victory. Olivia Christian pitched four strong innings, allowing only one hit. Offensively, Ava Nehring and Hannah Christian helped spark the rally with key hits in the late innings. Kayla Giardina closed out the game in relief, striking out three batters in the sixth and seventh innings.

Southern Miss head coach Natalie Poole praised the team’s offensive effort and defensive performance, noting some bright moments from the pitching staff. She expressed satisfaction with the team’s start to the season, which marks their first 3-0 record since 2023.

Notable debut performances included Carlee Tubbs, Ava Nehring, and Julia Glasgow, with Nehring recording her first collegiate hit and RBI. The team is set to face Louisiana Tech in their next game on Sunday at 9 a.m.
