Southern Miss Softball Sets Home Run Record in 13-10 Win Over App State
BOONE, N.C. — Southern Miss softball (21-13, Sun Belt 4-2) broke its program record with six home runs in a 13-10 victory over App State (21-9, Sun Belt 2-4) on Sunday, securing their second consecutive conference series win.
Head coach Natalie Poole praised her team’s focus and execution, noting that five players contributed to the six homers. Jolie Hays hit two home runs, while four Golden Eagles registered multi-RBI games and five had multi-hit efforts. Madilyn Graham earned the win, improving to 7-4 after pitching 4.2 innings.
Southern Miss took an early lead with a double from Carrie Green and Hays’ first home run of the season. App State responded with a leadoff homer from Makayla McClain, but the Golden Eagles answered back with three two-run homers in the fourth inning, including a two-run shot from Hannah Christian and a three-run blast from Abbi Troquille.
The Golden Eagles added four runs in the fifth, highlighted by a two-run homer from Troquille and a sacrifice fly from Christian. They scored one more run in the sixth on a throwing error, sealing the victory. Graham retired the Mountaineers in order in the bottom of the sixth to close out the game.
With the win, Southern Miss claimed their first Sun Belt series victory since 2014, marking a significant milestone for the program. The team is scheduled to face Nicholls in a midweek game on March 25, streamed on ESPN+. The Golden Eagles also rank nationally in several defensive and offensive categories, including fielding percentage and hit-by-pitches.
