Southern Miss Hosts South Alabama in Key Sun Belt Clash Thursday Night
The University of Southern Mississippi (13-13, 6-7 Sun Belt) will host South Alabama (17-7, 7-4 Sun Belt) Thursday night at Reed Green Coliseum, starting a four-game homestand. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:30 p.m. Central Time, following the women’s game at 5 p.m., according to university officials.
The game will be streamed on ESPN+ and broadcast on the Southern Miss Radio Network, with John Cox calling the action. Lee Roberts will handle play-by-play and Larry Boyd will provide color commentary for the ESPN+ broadcast.
Southern Miss enters the game after a series of notable performances. Djahi Binet earned Sun Belt Player of the Week honors after averaging 24 points and 11 rebounds in games against Marshall and Kent State. Binet also recorded a 30-point, 15-rebound game earlier this month, becoming the first player in the conference this season to reach those totals in a single game.
The Golden Eagles have also begun to excel at the free-throw line, making at least 20 free throws in eight games this season, including a season-high 27 in a win at Radford. Since the 2013-14 season, Southern Miss has rarely had such success from the line.
South Alabama, meanwhile, is riding a four-game winning streak and is coming off an 81-69 victory over Buffalo in the MAC-SBC Challenge. The Jaguars are led by Chaze Harris, who averages 17.5 points per game, and Jayden Cooper, who has scored in double figures in seven consecutive games. South Alabama ranks among the best nationally in turnovers committed per game, averaging just 8.8, and leads the Sun Belt in several defensive and efficiency categories.
Historically, Southern Miss holds a slight edge in the series with a 15-11 record in Hattiesburg. However, South Alabama has won the last six meetings, dating back to 2023. The teams will meet for the 54th time overall in this matchup.
